My name is Hannah Bajor the Pregnancy Super Coach with over twenty years in the field taking care of
women before, during and after their pregnancy.
Well, our little chat today is about spotting
during early pregnancy. Is it normal, is it not. Well, it can
definitely be very normal and the medical terminology for spotting
during early pregnancy more than likely is implantation bleeding,
but it could also go in the category of threatened abortion or
threatened miscarrying.
So, what sort of spotting in early pregnancy
should you be worried. Well, let us put it this way. It depends on
how much it is. Spotting only means a little bit of blood. Bleeding
means it is like a period and that is definitely something that you
would worry about; spotting not so much.
Now, the color of spotting in early pregnancy
could be red. If it is red in color then it just means that there is
a little bit of active bleeding going on inside your womb or from
the neck of your womb itself and the blood trickles down pretty
quickly to the outside.
Why would you have spotting going on or bleeding
going on in the inside of the womb when you are pregnant. Well, the
reason is when you initially become pregnant, this fertilized ovum
buries its way or eats its way through the inside lining of your
womb. Then it travels into the walls, into the muscle of your womb
itself, and when it embeds inside the muscle of your womb, it can
actually you know embed through a blood vessel and if it breaks a
little small blood vessel like you get a little scratch inside your
womb. It would then of course you will have a trickle of blood and
it can flow right down out through the neck of your womb down and
you would see it on the outside. That is normally not much at all.
It is referred to implantation bleeding.
Now, we look at the same scenario can also cause
brown bleeding or a brown discharge and that just means that when
that bleeding scenario happened like I just explained from
implantation, by the time it comes all the way down the womb out to
the outside, it was stale blood and stale blood is brown or black in
color. So, if it is brown or black in color that is probably even
better because you know it is an old bleed and hopefully everything
is okay.
Spotting during early pregnancy is associated
with cramps. Again, you know it may or may not indicate that you are
going to have a miscarriage or have a potential to miscarry, all
depends on your symptoms, how far you are along in pregnancy and how
bad the cramps are.
If you have spotting during early pregnancy, my
advise to you is to take it easy, not go to work for a couple of
days, go to bed, put your feet up until the bleeding goes away, and
certainly do not have any intercourse. If the spotting continues
then absolutely go and see your provider that is taking care of you
for your pregnancy, thats if you have already registered with
someone. If not registered then go ahead and see someone because it
could be as simple as that you might have a little inflammation of
the neck of your womb called cervicitis. It could have a little bit
of vaginal infection that is creating a little bit of bleeding.
If the case of cervicitis we would give you some
sort of treatment and you will be fine and would not interfere with
your pregnancy at all. The more you are informed about all the
different scenarios in pregnancy then the easier pregnancy you will
have and the less stressed you will be, and remember, please do not
worry because everything that you think and worry about, your baby
is going to pick it up and can be emotionally traumatized with it
and carry it for the rest of the life. So, please watch what you
think, say, and do during early pregnancy.
