Molar Pregnancy Or Partial Molar Pregnancy:
My name is Hannah Bajor the Pregnancy Super Coach with
over twenty years in the field taking care of women before, during
and after their pregnancy.
So lets talk about molar
pregnancy, what is it and you know what are the symptoms associated
with it. Well, approximately one in every 1000 to every 2000
pregnant woman end up having a molar pregnancy.
Molar pregnancy is absolutely
totally an abnormal pregnancy growth. Molar pregnancy is divided
into two types. Type one you have a partial molar pregnancy and type
two is you have a complete molar pregnancy.
A molar pregnancy is not a normal
growing pregnancy at all. If it is a complete molar pregnancy then
what this means is there is no baby, there is no placenta, there is
no amniotic fluid, there is just a big mole and it looks like
bunches of grapes growing inside your womb.
If you have been diagnosed as a
partial molar pregnancy then this is what has happened. It normally
means you had one egg but two sperms penetrated that egg and in this
process of duplicating and multiplying.
In a partial molar pregnancy
there was a severe abnormality of the developing embryo so you might
end up having some baby parts. You might have some parts of placenta
and you might have some water, but it is not a viable baby. There
normally is not a heartbeat, but you could have hair, you could have
teeth, you can have a lot of the babys body parts growing inside
this mole.
What are the signs and symptoms
that may indication that a woman might have of molar pregnancy.
Well, the first thing is you might have excess vomiting in
pregnancy. You might start being much bigger than your pregnancy
days.
Your pregnancy hormones are sky
high much higher than it should be for your gestational age and of
course a complete molar pregnancy or partial molar pregnancy it is
confirmed on ultrasound. When you have an ultrasound done with a
molar pregnancy there will be no babys heartbeat, but there will be
this grape-like mole growing inside your womb.
So what is the treatment for a
complete molar pregnancy or partial molar pregnancy. A lot of the
times molar pregnancies are absorbed inside the body themselves and
you know that can take a couple of weeks or couple of months for it
to happen. The body may automatically absorb the complete molar
pregnancy or partial molar pregnancy naturally and if it does not
then you might end up having a D&C allowing your physician can
scrape out the inside of the womb.
The problem is all molar
pregnancies is that you can produce pregnancy hormones from months
after the mole is no longer visible. Molar pregnancies definitely
put you at risk of developing cancer. So we are going to advise you
probably not to get pregnant for at least six months to a year after
you have had a complete molar pregnancy or partial molar pregnancy.
If this is the situation for you
and you are wondering can it happen to you again well we never know
the outcome of any pregnancy. If you are having a hard time dealing
