My name is Hannah Bajor the Pregnancy Super Coach with
over twenty years in the field taking care of women before, during
and after their pregnancy.
What exactly is an ectopic
pregnancy? Well under a normal situation when the egg meets the
sperm, it happens up in the fallopian tubes. It takes about 10-14
days for this fertilized ovum to swim its way all the way down into
the lining of the womb and find a little place where it is going to
grow.
An ectopic pregnancy is a
pregnancy that occurs outside the lining of the womb. You may be
wondering how many women does this happen to. Well it depends where
you get your statistics from, but on average one in every 4000
pregnant woman end up getting an ectopic pregnancy and about 95% of
those pregnancies all happen in the fallopian tube.
Now an ectopic pregnancy can be
very, very serious. About 5% of ectopic pregnancies actually happen
outside the fallopian tube in the abdominal cavity. An ectopic
pregnancy could happen in your cervix or any other place within the
abdomen.
Ectopic pregnancy is very serious
because it does kill. One out of every 2000 women that have an
ectopic pregnancy will die because of hemorrhage. What happens is a
woman gets pregnant, she has no symptoms at all. She is feeling
fine. She might even have the nausea. She has got a positive
pregnancy test.
The ectopic pregnancy is growing
normal except the pregnancy is not growing in the right place.
Inside your body you have this little thin fallopian tube and you
have a baby growing inside of the tube. As soon as the baby gets to
about six weeks pregnant that developing baby can no longer survive
within the fallopian tube because the fallopian tube is not big
enough for it.
So if you are lucky you will get
symptoms and those symptoms can be abdominal pain. Of course, you
would have all the symptoms of pregnancy and you might even know you
are pregnant, but the only one thing that you might get extra is
pain. This pain just happens out of nowhere. The pain is constant.
You might even notice that when you have intercourse it could even
hurt you.
If you are pregnant and you start
getting pain please go and see your primary care provider, so you
can have an ultrasound done and we can locate where your pregnancy
is.
I have seen on several occasion
women just show up in the emergency room with a huge hemorrhage.
What happens is the baby is going to grow and grow and grow inside
your fallopian tubes and you have huge blood vessels that are all
the way along the fallopian tube. As soon as this baby grows too
big, it is going to burst through your fallopian tube, burst through
a major blood vessel within your pelvis and within five minutes you
could actually hemorrhage to death.
I have seen a couple of woman
dead on arrival as a consequence from an ectopic pregnancy. If they
are suspecting that you have an ectopic pregnancy you already will
know how serious it is and probably you know if they suspect you
have an ectopic pregnancy they will want a confirmation diagnosis of
a definite ectopic or not.
After diagnosis straight away you
would be admitted to have surgery because they have to go into the
fallopian tube and crush out the pregnancy because if the ectopic
pregnancy bursts or ruptures you could die.
It is not unusual with an ectopic
pregnancy especially if it has ruptured that you could have lost
that fallopian tube. Well you know when you look at it losing a
fallopian tube yes I know it is very, very, very traumatic for a
woman. But thank God that you are diagnosed and that you had
competent physicians to save your life because if you did not you
would definitely have died from hemorrhage due to an ectopic
pregnancy.
