Back Pain Pregnancy
My name is Hannah Bajor and I am
the Pregnancy Success and Health coach which over twenty years in
the field taking care of women before, during, and after pregnancy.
Our topic for now is "Back pain pregnancy or back pain during pregnancy, why you
get it, and what you can do about it."
Normal weight gain in pregnancy is
about 35 pounds, but lots of women I have met over the years have
gained anywhere between 35 to 100 pounds during pregnancy. So,
whatever it is you are going to put on a lot of weight, a lot of the
weight is going to be on your stomach and your breasts. If the
weight were to stay there without changing your posture you would
actually fall over.
Therefore your body automatically
accommodates by changing the position of your spine, resulting in a
spinal position we call pregnancy lordosis. Pregnancy lordosis is a
situation where your spine becomes super curved in the back and this
can create a huge pull and stretch on your muscles. Your muscles are
already relaxing, so they do not have the normal support that you
would have otherwise outside of pregnancy.
Look at this model of the female
pelvis. As you can see, here in the back you have two hinge joints.
When you get towards the end of your pregnancy, a baby cannot fit to
a normal-sized womans pelvis without the pelvis opening and
expanding. So it expands here at the back pulling and stretching and
the same here at the front by your pubic bone, pulls and stretches
to allow this baby to be able to go down into the pelvis and to come
out during birth.
All of these factors considering,
it is not unusual for pregnant women to get back pain during
pregnancy. If you get back pain during your pregnancy, straight away
start doing things to prevent the back pain getting worse or getting
out of control. I definitely recommend having nice warm soaks,
putting nice warm compresses on your back, having some massages.
I would absolutely recommend that
every pregnant mum go to a chiropractor during pregnancy. A lot of
traditional OB/GYNs are terrified of sending the women to a
chiropractor because they are just not informed as to what
chiropractors actually do. Chiropractors would never do anything to
you that is unsafe. They are experts in what they do and they can
help your spine accommodate to all the changes and it would help
your pelvis adjust better. In fact if you have a better positioned
pelvis going into labor, you are actually going to function much
better in labor, especially postpartum after everything is out of
shape go to see a chiropractor.
Apart from that, let us look at
what things can you do to your own body. Wearing a good supporting
bra so that your breasts are uplifted and they do not feel so heavy
will help with your back pain during pregnancy. This will take off a
lot of stress and strain off the upper part of your back.
There is a lot of pregnancy
stomach binders that is out there now. Again, if you having back
pain or lower back pain during pregnancy wear them because it will
help support your posture.
Look at your shoes. I cannot
believe how many pregnant women out there are wearing ridiculously
high shoes or low shoes during pregnancy. Remember as you become
pregnant all these bones, muscles moves within your body. So during
the entire pregnancy, please wear good supportive foot wear that
support your arch to not end up like me. After one of my pregnancy,
both of my arches prolapsed and I was wearing decent enough shoes,
but obviously that did not have the support that I needed on the
insoles and I ended up having years of pain due to the arches being
prolapsed.
Please get yourself good
shoes to start with and wear good shoes throughout your pregnancy.
The more informed you are about pregnancy then the easier time you
are going to have during your pregnancy and the happier you and your
baby will be.
