Information On Abnormal Pap Smear And Pregnancy
My name is Hannah Bajor the Pregnancy Super Coach with over twenty years in the field taking care of women
before, during and after their pregnancy.
I am also a trained colposcopist
and have taken care of well over a thousand women with abnormal pap
smears either inside or outside pregnancy. So here we are. You are
pregnant. Every woman, when they go and have their first prenatal
visit, will have a pap smear.
A pap smear is a screening tool to
screen for the potential for cancer. What we want to pick up is as
follows
- Are your cells normal
- Or are they abnormal.
Now, if your cells are abnormal it
does not mean that you have got cancer, but it does mean that you
have a little bit of a problem that if you do not take care of it,
it could eventually lead to cancer. So if you have been told that
you have an abnormal pap smear during your pregnancy, please do not
worry.
It is very good at least that you
have gone and got the results and you know what to expect. Sometimes
we would send you for a colposcopy. But not all abnormal pap tests
results in pregnancy would require that we send you for a colposcopy.
What is a colposcopy. It is a very
high-resolution microscope. So it is exactly like a pap smear except
we look through this colposcope and we look at the cells on the
cervix and we look for lesions and we can see how bad it is.
The majority of women that have
abnormal pap smears and pregnancy are never that bad during
pregnancy but on the rare occasion if it is, then we will discuss
that with you. So please do not sweat it out, but do follow up and
make sure after you have the baby that it is crucial to go back in
and have a repeat pap test done, so we can see are the cells the
same or are they abnormal.
Sometimes they heal by themselves.
Sometimes they do not. So please but do not think "Oh My God!" you
are going to die of cancer or anything like that. No. Just take it
easy but do good follow-up.
